SIERRA LEONE STANDS FIRM AGAINST MARITIME CRIME

Sierra Leone’s commitment to safeguarding its international reputation and protecting its territorial waters from transnational organised crime remains unwavering, as investigations continue into the vessel intercepted by Spanish authorities in relation to a suspected cocaine consignment.
Authorities in Sierra Leone have maintained a firm and consistent position that preliminary investigations conducted so far have not established any evidence indicating that narcotics were loaded onto the vessel while it was within Sierra Leonean waters.
The Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA), working closely with the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU), and other security agencies, has demonstrated full cooperation throughout the ongoing investigations, reaffirming the country’s zero-tolerance stance against maritime crimes and illegal trafficking. According to findings already made public by the security sector, all standard port clearance procedures, cargo documentation, vessel movement records, CCTV monitoring systems, and inspection protocols undertaken at the Queen Elizabeth II Quay were reviewed, with no detected trace of illicit narcotics linked to cargo operations conducted in Sierra Leone.
Security authorities have also pointed to emerging indications that suspicious activities connected to the vessel may have occurred beyond Sierra Leone’s territorial jurisdiction, particularly after the vessel departed the country’s shores.
The Government of Sierra Leone has meanwhile intensified diplomatic and security engagements with international counterparts as part of efforts to uncover the full facts surrounding the incident, demonstrating the state’s seriousness and agility in confronting transnational organised crime.
Observers say the manner in which Sierra Leonean authorities swiftly initiated investigations, coordinated with international partners, and openly communicated preliminary findings reflects growing institutional maturity and the country’s commitment to international maritime compliance standards.
For the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority, the development further underscores ongoing investments in port security systems, cargo monitoring mechanisms, and international best practices aimed at positioning Sierra Leone as a trusted gateway for global maritime trade and investment.
Industry stakeholders have also cautioned against premature conclusions and politically coloured narratives capable of undermining investor confidence and damaging the country’s international image while investigations remain active. They note that matters involving international maritime crime require patience, professionalism, and reliance on verified information from competent state institutions rather than speculation circulating on social and political platforms.
As investigations continue, authorities are encouraging the public to remain calm, support lawful processes, and rely on official updates from the Government of Sierra Leone and the country’s recognised security and maritime institutions.
Sierra Leone continues to strengthen its maritime governance architecture and regional security cooperation, reinforcing its determination to protect its waters, preserve investor confidence, and maintain its standing within the international maritime community.
