MUSLIM FATHER OF ONE GOES INTO HIDING
A young Sierra Leonean man identified as Alieu Aziz Conteh, a married father of one, is reportedly in hiding after his wife, Mariama Jalloh, allegedly discovered his secret same-sex relationships, sparking outrage within both families and their community.
According to sources close to the family, Aziz’s disappearance followed growing tensions inside his home after his wife, described as a Fulah woman from a deeply conservative Muslim background, allegedly uncovered messages and evidence suggesting that her husband had been involved in gay affairs for some time.
The revelation reportedly sent shockwaves through both families, who are said to be staunch Muslims with strict religious beliefs that strongly condemn same-sex relationships.
Family sources disclosed that heated confrontations erupted shortly after the discovery, with some relatives allegedly threatening severe action against Aziz. Fearing for his safety and possible mob retaliation from angry relatives, community members, and even close associates, the young man reportedly fled his residence and has since gone into hiding.
“Everybody was shocked. Nobody expected something like this from him because both families are very religious,” a source familiar with the matter disclosed. “People became very angry after the information spread in the community.”
Residents say news of the alleged affair quickly circulated within the neighborhood, fueling intense public discussions and condemnation.
In many conservative communities across Sierra Leone, homosexuality remains highly stigmatized and socially unacceptable, particularly within strongly religious Muslim and Christian households. Same-sex relations involving men are also criminalized under Sierra Leone’s colonial-era laws, although prosecutions are reportedly rare. Human rights organizations, however, continue to document cases of discrimination, threats, violence, and social rejection against suspected LGBTQ individuals in the country.
Sources say Aziz has not returned home since the incident, while efforts by some relatives to trace his whereabouts have so far proven unsuccessful.
Meanwhile, tensions are said to remain high between both families as the controversy continues to generate debate within the community.
Neither Aziz Conteh nor members of his immediate family could be reached for comment at the time of publication.
