At the third session of the Sixth Parliament of the Republic of Sierra Leone, His Excellency the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, in his Presidential Address, acknowledged the significant strides made by the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA).
The President lauded the Authority’s ongoing reforms, particularly its efforts to modernize systems and enhance road safety. Emphasizing that road safety remains a national priority, His Excellency highlighted the successful introduction of several digital innovations by the SLRSA, including Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) vehicle licenses, digital number plates, life cards, fitness certificates, and biometric driver’s licenses. These measures, he noted, are pivotal in curbing fraud, improving traffic security, and strengthening accountability.
“New systems enhance vehicle traceability, reduce identity fraud, and strengthen accountability,” the President stated.
Further, the President outlined the Authority’s efforts to expand access to services across the country. New service centers have been established in both the Eastern and Western areas of Freetown, and a mobile registration unit has been deployed to serve remote communities. He also commended the implementation of modern queuing systems at the Kissy Road and Mile 6 centers, which have helped ease congestion. Similar systems are planned for Bo and Kenema to further decentralize service delivery.
In line with promoting transparency and efficiency, His Excellency disclosed that a real-time service monitoring dashboard—developed in collaboration with Autospect—will soon be operational. This dashboard aims to enhance oversight and accountability across the Authority’s operations.
The President also addressed the growing need for enforcement, revealing that abandoned and illegally parked vehicles in Central Freetown are now routinely clamped or towed, reflecting increased vigilance by the Authority.
He concluded his remarks by commending the Highway Management Unit at Mile 91, which has been instrumental in expanding road patrols and ensuring safer, more efficient intercity travel.
It is worth noting that since the appointment of Mr. James Baggie Bio as Executive Director of the SLRSA, alongside his Deputy Mr. Josie Abraham Scott-Manga, Board Chairman AIG (Rtd) Thomas Mustapha Lahai and Members of the Board, and Management Team, the Authority has embarked on a series of bold and innovative safety reforms aimed at transforming road safety management across the country.
