NASSIT: Strengthening Social Security, Strengthening Sierra Leone
The National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT) continues to reinforce its role as a cornerstone of Sierra Leone’s national development and social protection system. Established to provide retirement, invalidity, and survivors’ benefits to workers across the country, the Trust has in recent years undertaken significant reforms to enhance transparency, service delivery, and contributor confidence.
Under the leadership of Director General Fuad S. Daboh, NASSIT has expanded access to services nationwide, modernized its operational systems, and renewed its commitment to protecting and securing the future of contributors. Many of these reforms are visible in the improved customer service experience, digitization of records, timely payment of benefits, and ongoing investment in projects designed to create sustainable economic and social value.
A key focus of NASSIT’s transformation agenda has been public engagement and accountability. The institution has opened its doors wider to contributors, pensioners, and the general public—ensuring that concerns are heard and addressed, and that accurate information guides public understanding of the Trust’s work. The widely successful Meet the People outreach series, for example, has brought NASSIT into communities across the country, fostering trust and helping citizens understand their rights and responsibilities under the Scheme.
Investments are another important pillar of NASSIT’s mandate. These investments are carefully regulated to ensure long-term sustainability and growth of the pension fund. Recent efforts have prioritized prudent management, due diligence, and diversified portfolio strategies aimed at balancing security and value creation. While some legacy projects once presented challenges, the current administration has placed strong emphasis on review, restructuring, and accountability to safeguard contributor funds and restore confidence.
NASSIT has also made strides in improving its benefit processing systems. Pensioners can now expect more efficient verification, faster payments, and improved customer care. Digital transformation has helped reduce delays and manual bottlenecks, aligning the institution with global best practices.
Furthermore, the Trust continues to collaborate with government, private sector institutions, and international partners to expand social security coverage—particularly to workers in the informal sector. Sierra Leone’s workforce is largely informal, and NASSIT’s ongoing plan to integrate non-traditional workers into the Scheme marks a major step toward inclusive national development.
As Sierra Leone continues to grow, NASSIT remains a vital pillar of national stability—ensuring that workers who contribute to the economy today can retire with dignity and security tomorrow. The institution’s commitment is clear: to protect the present, secure the future, and serve with transparency, integrity, and purpose.
NASSIT is not just administering benefits—it is strengthening the social foundation of the country.
