Flagbearer aspirant of the opposition All Peoples Congress (APC), Dr. Ibrahim Bangura, has expressed deep concern over the detention of the party’s National Secretary General, Lansana Dumbuya, following his court appearance in Freetown.Dumbuya was on Thursday, 12 February 2026, denied bail and remanded at Pademba Road Prison after a brief appearance before a Magistrate’s Court. His detention follows an earlier invitation and day-long questioning on 5 February 2026 by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Sierra Leone Police. In a statement issued on Friday, Dr. Bangura noted that the charges against Dumbuya reportedly stem from the same alleged offence for which the APC had already been fined by the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC). He said the development raises broader concerns about fairness, consistency, and the preservation of democratic space in Sierra Leone.Bangura emphasized the importance of tolerance, restraint, and the protection of democratic freedoms, warning that the handling of political matters must reflect respect for constitutional rights and due process. He called for the fair and lawful application of bail in line with established legal principles.Referencing the lessons of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Sierra Leone, he underscored that peace and stability depend on strong democratic institutions, justice, and inclusivity. He urged stakeholders within the APC to remain united and focused during what he described as a critical period for the party.“This moment calls for reflection, restraint, and a renewed commitment to the democratic values that unite us as a nation,” Bangura stated, adding that Sierra Leone’s progress hinges on justice, peace, and reconciliation. The detention of the senior opposition figure has further heightened political tensions, with observers closely watching how the matter unfolds in the coming days.
