As DG Daboh Pushes Bold Reforms…
NASSIT Records 30% Membership Growth

The National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT) has announced a remarkable surge in its membership base, recording a 30 percent increase since 2018, in what experts are describing as a clear sign of growing public confidence in the institution’s role as the country’s foremost social protection body.
The milestone was disclosed at a recent stakeholders’ engagement where NASSIT’s leadership showcased progress in its mandate to provide retirement and social security benefits for Sierra Leoneans.
A Trust on the Rise
Since its establishment through the NASSIT Act No. 5 of 2001, the Trust has been at the center of ensuring workers enjoy retirement security, survivors’ benefits, and protection against life’s uncertainties. The latest figures, showing a sharp upward trajectory in membership, are being celebrated as a breakthrough in coverage expansion.
“This growth is not accidental,” said NASSIT Director General Mohamed Fuaad Daboh. “It reflects our deliberate reforms, technological upgrades, and the relentless effort to bring social security closer to every Sierra Leonean—both in the formal and informal sectors.”
Technology Driving Change
Central to NASSIT’s recent achievements is a sweeping digital transformation agenda. Over the past three years, the Trust has invested heavily in modern ICT infrastructure aimed at improving records management, reducing delays, and enhancing transparency.
Beneficiaries now report faster processing of benefits and greater accessibility to information—changes that align NASSIT with international best practices in social protection administration.
Reaching the Unprotected
One of the Trust’s most ambitious moves has been the introduction of a blueprint for an informal sector social insurance scheme, designed to extend coverage to millions of Sierra Leoneans working outside the formal wage system.
This move, according to analysts, could be a game-changer for Sierra Leone’s social security landscape. “For decades, workers in the informal economy—market women, okada riders, traders, artisans—have been left vulnerable. This initiative promises to change that narrative,” remarked one social policy expert.
Leadership Recognition
The Trust’s progress has not gone unnoticed. Earlier this year, Director General Daboh was honored with a prestigious award for Most Outstanding Public Service Leader, a recognition of his visionary leadership and hands-on approach in repositioning NASSIT as one of Sierra Leone’s most credible public institutions.
Colleagues within the civil service have lauded his reforms as “bold and people-centered,” crediting him with instilling efficiency and restoring confidence in the pension system.
A Stronger Future for Social Security
With membership numbers soaring and reforms underway, NASSIT is steadily building the financial muscle to ensure long-term sustainability of pension payments and benefits. Officials have also pledged to deepen transparency and accountability in the management of members’ contributions.
Looking ahead, the Trust says it is committed to not only expanding coverage but also enhancing the quality of services delivered to contributors and beneficiaries.
“This is about dignity, security, and hope,” Daboh emphasized. “Every Sierra Leonean deserves peace of mind knowing that when their working days are over, NASSIT will be there for them and their families.”
